Attorney Michael (“Mike”) Darmante helps individuals and families throughout Southwest Virginia navigate some of life’s most difficult situations and transitions with strategic, practical, and compassionate legal representation. Since the beginning of his legal career, Mike has focused almost exclusively on family law, representing clients in complex divorce, custody, visitation, support, protective Orders, adoption, and other domestic relations matters. This focus has given him the experience and judgment necessary to guide clients through high-stakes family law disputes.
Mike has earned recognition from the legal community for his work and professionalism. He has been selected to Super Lawyers® Rising Stars in 2024, 2025, and 2026, recognized in The Best Lawyers in America®: Ones to Watch for Family Law since 2023, and named a Virginia Business Legal Elite attorney in 2022.
The majority of Mike’s practice is devoted to contested divorce, custody, support, protective Orders, and adoption matters. With this experience, Mike understands that family law cases are not just legal disputes—they involve children, emotions, financial security, and long-term family stability. Mike develops case strategies tailored to each client’s personal circumstances and goals, with a focus on practical solutions and effective advocacy in and out of the courtroom.
One of Mike’s defining professional experiences is his work as a Guardian ad Litem. Certified early in his career, he has represented the interests of hundreds of children in custody, divorce, and child dependency proceedings. That experience has provided Mike with a unique perspective of how Virginia courts evaluate custody disputes and helps inform how he approaches evidence, risk, and strategy in high-conflict cases.
Mike’s approach is grounded in preparation, clear communication, and sound judgment. He works very closely with his clients to identify their priorities, explain the legal process in straightforward terms, and develop strategies designed to accomplish their goals while minimizing unnecessary conflict.
He understands that clients are often facing the legal system for the first time during a stressful and uncertain period. Mike provides consistent communication, candid guidance, and steady advocacy throughout the process. Whether through negotiation or litigation, he is committed to pursuing the best possible outcome under the circumstances.
Originally from New York, Mike spent much of his childhood in Florida and Minnesota before making Virginia his home. He graduated summa cum laude with High Honors from Saint Cloud State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History with a minor in International Relations. He then attended Washington and Lee University School of Law, where he served as President of the Legal Honor Society and Editor-in-Chief of The Law News. During his tenure, the publication received two American Bar Association awards.
Outside the office, Mike enjoys following sports, cooking—especially recipes inspired by his Italian heritage—and spending time with his family.
